Floor Tiles – FAQs

Can you paint floor tiles?

Yes, you can buy specific tile paint which varies depending on the type of tile. You’ll need to clean, sand, and prime the tiles and apply at least two coats.

While it’s a cost-effective option, you probably won’t be able to achieve the same high-quality finish of an original tile. You’ll likely need to repaint the floor tiles after a year too, as the paint will crack and wear.

Can you put lino over floor tiles?

Yes, you can lay lino over floor tiles, but you’ll need to check the moisture level of your subfloor – the material underneath the tiles – first. If you have high levels of moisture, it can lead to damp issues when you lay lino over the top.

You’ll also need to check the existing tiles are level and use a suitable adhesive to make sure the lino doesn’t slip.

Can you use wall adhesive on floor tiles?

You generally shouldn’t use wall adhesive for floor tiles.

Wall adhesives are designed for vertical surfaces and likely won’t be strong enough to withstand the horizontal pressure when someone walks across them.

You can browse our wide range of adhesives to find the ideal fit for your project.

How do you clean ceramic floor tiles?

To clean ceramic floor tiles, you’ll first need to remove debris and dirt with a vacuum or soft brush. Use a toothbrush to clear any dirt in the grout lines

Mop the surface with hot, soapy water and a suitable tile cleaning solution before drying the floor tiles with a lint-free cloth to avoid water spots.

You should avoid rough brushes and harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia-based products.

How do you remove old floor tiles?

You can remove most old floor tiles by using a hammer and a thin chisel or flat-head screwdriver.

Place the chisel in the middle of a tile and strike it with the hammer, which should shatter the tile into several pieces. You can then pry up the pieces with the chisel and carefully remove any remaining adhesive on the subfloor.

For older tiles, you may need specialist equipment like a power scraper or a wheel-mounted tile lifter. Make sure you wear protective equipment like gloves and goggles.

How many floor tiles do I need?

The number of floor tiles you will need depends on the size of the floor you’re looking to cover.

We have a handy floor area calculator that can help you work out how many floor tiles you’ll need for your project.
