Outdoor Tiles - FAQ

What to clean outdoor tiles with?

For general up keep of porcelain tiles or slabs with a glazed finish a solution of mild washing up liquid and warm water is gentle and effective enough for routine cleaning. Mix a few drops of washing up liquid in a bucket of warm water, apply it to the tiles using a soft brush or mop, scrub gently, and rinse thoroughly.

For hard to remove oil, grease, ingrained dirt, grime and old wax layers there is a wide range of mild to intensive cleaners that will clean natural and artificial stone, porcelain, terracotta, and encaustic tiles with brushing.

How long do outdoor tiles last?

With the right installation and maintenance, 20mm porcelain tiles can last for decades. It's important to use tiles rated for outdoor use since exposure to the elements can cause weathering and discolouration over time. It using natural stone tiles that require sealing, sealed tiles can resist water and other environmental damage, as well as staining.

Can you use outdoor tiles as pavers?

20mm porcelain tiles are simply an engineered ceramic tile that is extra thick so you can use it as a paver!

Do outdoor tiles need waterproofing?

All our porcelain tiles are glazed which makes them water resistant.

If you choose a natural stone or unglazed tile they will require sealing to protect them from the elements, water marks and staining.

Can you lay outdoor tiles over concrete?

Yes! When laying 20mm porcelain tile slabs on a solid concrete base tilers will use a sand and cement mortar. Similar to laying paving slabs.

For more information on how to lay outdoor tiles read of blog.

Can outdoor tiles be used indoors?

20mm porcelain tiles can be used indoors but are usually very large and hard to cut so not very practical indoors. Also due to them being extra thick they might be not be suitable for under floor heating or as affective.

What size are outdoor tiles?

Our 20mm Porcelain tiles come in different sizes, starting from 60x60cm up to 60x120cm.

You can use smaller tiles outdoor but they will generally not be as thick as 20mm. For thinner tiles you will need to make sure they are suitable for outdoor use and that the surface you are tiling onto is solid and flat so tiling is possible.

Can you pressure wash outdoor tiles?

20mm porcelain tiles are strong enough to withstand pressure washers.

Porcelain tiles should be easy to clean compared to concrete pavers due to being glazed. Brushing with Water and soap (or specialist cleaning solutions) on a regular basis should mean no need to use a power washer to remove built up grime and algae.

Note pressure washers might not effect the tile but might remove any grout work between the tiles so be careful if using a power washer.

How thick do outdoor tiles need to be?

We recommend 20mm porcelain tiles as they are designed for outdoor use being extra strong and usually having an anti-slip finish.

You can use regular indoor porcelain tiles or natural stone/terracotta tiles that start from 7mm but you will need to prepare the surface the tiles are to be laid and fixed onto to support the tiles so they do not crack or become loose over time.

Can you put outdoor tiles on grass?

Yes! 20mm tiles can be used on grass due to being strong and heavy, just like a paving slab.

Make sure the grass area is flat and solid as you don't want the tiles to move when walked on.

Do outdoor tiles get slippery?

All our 20mm porcelain tiles have a slip rating of R11 or higher meaning they are classified as having an anti slip finish.

It's important to note that it's possible to slip on any paving or outdoor tile, regardless of its slip rating. This is because a number of factors are involved in accidents, from choice of footwear, to weather conditions, spillages and more.
